Half the size of most other cultivars, this one shares their tough constitution and season-long appeal. Upright flowers emerge cream-colored and become a surprising wine-red color with age.

During the 2011 Magnolia Society meeting in Rhode Island, a majority of ladies in the crowd raved about this abundant bloomer with its rosy-accented flowers. It's a wonderful selection due to the warm color tones, blooming later than any of the other yellows and before the emergent leaves. August Kehr, the hybridizer, would have never accepted much credit for this plant he created, but he deserves all our thanks for his exceptional work, including this plant. Interesting story: On the way to see Augie from Raleigh, NC Pat McCracken and Mark Krautmann decided to accept August's invitation to name all of his (at that time, only numbered) superior yellows. Before we got to Hendersonville, where he and his wife lived, we came up with Stellar Acclaim, Sunsation, Solar Eclipse, Hot Flash, and Sunspire. Augie was too modest to name his own "children".

Gunnera is one of South America's best contributions to our gardens, with leaves easily reaching 5 ft. across and 7 ft. high, sometimes more! It is easy and rapid-growing in moist soil, blossoming annually with tiny flowers on large 2 ft. club-like structures. Our liners finish fast in a #2 or #3 container. (Note: For a plant that loves water, it seems oddly averse to the high summer humidity of the East and Southeast).

Our native Willamette Valley shooting star adorns our wetland prairies in the spring with a splash of hot pink. Combined with common camas, the landscape in April resembles an impressionist painting. There are multiple flowers on top of 15 inch stems. The brown seed pods also add early summer interest when used in landscape plantings.

Wonderfully tall bunch grass with delicate inflorescence. Undersides of leaves are blue-green, 3-5 ft in flower. Shade tolerant.

Rosy plectritis is an outstanding annual for restorations. Its bright pink flowers are attractive to numerous pollinators including spring butterflies. Gorgeous sunflower! Multiple flowering stems provide spring blossoms. Found in upland prairies and rocky bald with our native Oregon White Oak. 2-3 ft tall. The seeds are a favorite of goldfinches returning from migration.

A Heronswood Nursery selection with bamboo-like stems that emerge dark purple rather than green, sheathed at each node with golden-tan papery bracts. Some plants are described as having red flowers, but the term "red" used here in the cultivar name misinforms those who have not seen it in flower. Many firms list flowers as "fuchsia pink". It's certainly not blood-red like Rosa moyesii, but this selection is a distinctively much brighter pink than seedlings. So it catches your eye - one of our favorites. Its flowers closely match the intense pink color of Prunus campanulata.

Douglas's sagewort is a three-four foot perennial that forms a 3-4 foot wide patch and has the fragrance of sage. It is found on woodland edges, stream banks, ditch banks, road cuts or other disturbed areas. It also tolerates sand and seasonal flooding. The flowers are wind pollinated

This small-flowered native buttercup is known by the common names woodland buttercup and little buttercup. It is native to many parts of the west where it grows in wet prairies or wet, wooded habitat such as oak/ash woodland and forested streambanks. It often grows as a biennial.

For both wildlife gardens and restorations, Western goldenroad provides late-summer sprays of yellow flowers with soft foliage that are important resources for butterflies and bees. It is rhizomatous often forming colonies so makes a good bedding plant (rhizomatous), 2-3 ft tall. Provides nectar for Black Hairstreak butterflies along willow riparian areas.

Blooms 2-3 times during summer months. Cold hardy with medium green leaves and lavender-blue flowers on 10-12 in. racemes.

Wow! A knock-out new hybrid from the late Dennis Ledvina, a result of his astutely crossing 'Yellow Bird' with 'Caerhays Belle'. The blooms are strikingly beautiful, aptly named for their soft blush-pink color.

Unusual, noteworthy tree that grows in a very tight, columnar form, a sort of deciduous version of Italian cypress. Like the species, it is widely adaptable. Good fall color.

Although the flowers are not showy, this plant is a must for a restoration site due to attracting many, many species of native bumblebees. The slender flower stems produce flowers for weeks; increasing its value for pollinators. It is found in upland prairies and mixed woodlands.

With few prickles on its stems and clusters of pink flowers, this wild rose thrives in lightly shaded locations and is a good candidate for the ornamental garden. BC south to Northern CA.

This perennial lupine has deep-lavender flowers and widely lobed leaves that are tinged with purple. It grows a variety of habitats in the west. In the Willamette Valley it can be found in dry prairies and foothills. It will tolerate some woodland edge shade.

Rusty popcorn flower is most often found in dry grasslands and open woodlands. In western Oregon, it can be found growing in rock outcrops with Oregon white oak and madrone and other annuals such as blue-eyed Mary and rosy plectritis creating quite a beautiful natural rock garden.

2-4 ft. shrub native across a broad swath in the upper latitudes of North America. Small pink flowers emerge in summer followed by white berries in the fall. Hummingbirds are attracted to the flowers. Its strong root system makes this shrub useful to control erosion on steep slopes of an embankment. Tolerates wet soils as well, so it is frequently used in riparian restoration. Used as an ornamental, easy to grow and gratifying with its persistent winter fruits. Occasionally head it back for best ornamental performance.

Chamisso sedge is natives to western North America and is found in many types of habitats. It can tolerate drier conditions than most of our native sedges. It grows in wet prairies but also on forest edges.

Stiffly horizontal, this male is a dwarf shrubby form that grows 3-4 ft. tall x 5-8 ft. wide over 10 years.

Oregon saxifrage grows in bogs, marshes, wet meadows and prairies throughout the west. It has fleshy roots that divide by off-sets and flowers that bloom April-May. Nectar species for Mylitta Cresent Butterfly.

Similar to 'Fastigiata', but with slower growth habit and denser foliage. Its narrow columnar form grows to 40 ft. at maturity. The crispy serrated green leaves turn to gold in the fall, an attractive contrast to the smooth, gray bark.

This tall (up to 5 feet in flower) perennial grass is native to many western states and does well in a variety of habitats. The flowers are in spikes with long awns and turn golden brown in our mid-summer prairies looking impressive as they wave in the breeze. This is not a dominant grass of our Willamette Valley prairies but an important component to add diversity to a site

This variety has a significant advantage over seedlings due to its prominent white stripes on green bark, so much so that the trunk appears mostly white. Twigs and young branches are covered with a waxy white bloom - as on a grape skin. In winter the tree evokes a chalk drawing look in the landscape. Exceptionally hardy.

Sitka brome is a shade-tolerant native brome often found in the Willamette Valley in woodlands with Blue-Wildrye. It has long flowering stems and nodding flower stalks.

A Heritage Seedlings selection, much more upright and tree-like. The dark green foliage is of normal size and shape, but its silhouette is an attractive flame shape, twice as tall as wide with unusually tight branch angles. If you're pruning wild seedlings into tree form, abandon that tactic to save labor. Upgrade your vine maple list to offer this new native selection and show your customers the benefit of predictable form in a residential landscape. It offers the prospect of uniformity and lower maintenance in a commercial job.

"Variegated" doesn't begin to describe this extraordinary cultivar of a species that generally lacks ornamental merit. In addition to the leaves being purple beneath, they're a kaleidoscope of astonishing variegation throughout. It doesn't burn in full sun, and is exceptionally drought resistant and cold hardy. Whether placed as an accent against larger, darker trees, or as a specimen up front, it will elicit comments from all who enjoy seeing it for the first time. This goes on your 'buy list'. Hearts of Gold' is the first of several new yellow-leafed redbuds. Its neon-yellow foliage is an immediate contrast in any landscape. Upright growth like the species; no leaf scorch in summer.

With attractive lacey foliage that is very sweetly scented this makes an attractive, colonizing, small shrub that should be planted where it can be seen closely and easily touched to release its fragrance into the air. It has a long history of medicinal uses but is seen less frequently than deserved outside the North East.

The culmination of 15 yrs. of breeding - a compact, small tree maturing at 10-13 ft. tall. Sensational black-red buds open to small, globular tulip-shaped blooms of deep rich, maroon-purple - both inner and outer surfaces. Reflexed tepal tips fade to a lighter magenta-rose. ‘Genie’ has lightly scented blooms.

With its origins on the West coast you might think that is why we are infatuated with this selection but really it is because of its unique attributes. It blossoms later than Charity and has bolder, broader leaves that, unbelievably, are more architectural. Also the flower clusters are a little fatter and shorter.

Selected long ago at Bellevue Botanic Garden, WA, for its superior form and color. It emerges every spring with dark chocolate foliage. Over the season, the leaves age to green with some ruddy highlights. White flowers on stems to 4 ft., leaves to 24 in.

It is widely recognized as one of the best forms that emerges with red leaves. The color is retained longer than other varieties, especially in full sun. Rodgersia are prone to spring frost so choosing a good site is important, and if they do get burnt back they will re-emerge. They are strong. Spreading ground cover to 24 in. in foliage, and 4ft., in blossom with white flowers.

Guy Sternberg, Starhill Forest Arboretum, introduced this fine oak hybrid in recent years. Tight branch habit, straight stems, and columnar form. Here in Oregon the persistent golden winter foliage contrasts with the typical russet of oak or beech leaves.

Here in Oregon we have noted it's ability to grow very rapidly but with straight stems, while other columnar selections have the habit of having wavy growth similar to Q. robur fastigiata. Indeed the fall color is a stand out of among oaks for us, with yellows, orange and some red. The retained winter foliage is darker by several shades when compared to other oaks.

Also selected at Starhill Forest Arboretum by Guy Sternberg for its narrow and upright growth. The much shinier foliage is a little smaller than the other sections with smaller lobes.

Introduced by Ray and Cindy Jackson. New growth has a light, Pumpkin-orange tint that distinguishes it from the uniformly green-ish-yellow color of 'Hearts of Gold'. In the heat of the Midwest and SE, it doesn't burn; that just makes it grow faster. We think you'll be amazed at its incandescent attractiveness, whether in a wholesale nursery or potted up for direct sale in a GC.

A relatively new introduction from Japan, it has bright yellow stems and shares with other bright yellow or red-stem selections susceptibility to Pseudomonas stem blight if it is fertilized too late in the growing season. Go easy on the nitrogen and protect young grafts indoors for the first few winters until the recent season's growth hardens off.

A more recent introduction from Japan, it should become popular for it's narrow upright form. Green foliage is smaller as compared to seedlings, on twiggy stems.

An exceptionally attractive, relatively new introduction from TN. With so many new redbuds in the trade, we have to wonder when they will start to look like re-runs, but this is clearly a fine variety. Smaller in stature (12-15 ft. at maturity) than the species, its foliage is set on its branches with Vegas dealer-like precision. This one will grab your heart.

Result of a 'Forest Pansy' x 'Covey' cross, this is a hardy, compact genetic "combo" of purple foliage in a redbud weeper. If you don't mind staking it until it gets to 8 ft. or more, it will reward your efforts with small stature and clearly unique character to make your clients proud.

With fruit color that is a major departure from the normal reds these golden hued berries are quite desirable. In our experience they don't set as many berries per stem as standard cut branch varieties but the color alone is enough to make them serviceable for the market.
